Question 2: I have a mouse that connects to a USB port. When I turn on the computer, the mouse sometimes does not work. Is there some way to fix this?

Answer 2: There are occasional problems with Windows recognizing devices on USB ports when the computer is restarted. This can include printers, keyboards, and mice connected to USB ports. In the case of the keyboard and mouse, this can be particularly annoying since the manual solution is to disconnect the reconnect the device, which usually works.

A more reliable solution is to use a USB-to-PS2 adapter. Most or many USB keyboards and mice have this adapter included with the device, but many people don't use it because it seems unnecessary. A PS/2 connection is the round multi-pin that keyboards and mice have been reliably connected to for several years. The PS/2 connectors are much more reliable, so the problems with the USB mouse or USB keyboard should stop.

Procedure to fix a "squirrelly" USB mouse or keyboard:

  1. Connect the USB mouse to the USB-to-PS2 adapter and then connect the adapter to the corresponding PS/2 mouse connector on the chassis.
  2. With a keyboard that has a "funky" USB connector, conned the USB connector to a USB-to-PS/2 adapter and then connect the adapter to the corresponding PS/2 keyboard connector on the chassis.
