| Servers for small, medium, and large businesses are
important to provide the applications, utilities, and tools to help run a
business. Servers need to have some basic attributes. Servers need to be: |
| |
- Fast enough. This is accomplished using one
or more processors, "enough cache memory in the processor, and enough
random access memory (RAM) to keep the processor from having to store
things on the hard disks (so-called virtual memory).
- Have enough storage to hold the information that
the business needs. This could be one or more databases for accounting,
customer relationship, inventory, or other information, as examples.
- Reliable. This means that they need to use
good quality components from manufacturers that have a track record of
quality. Servers that are designed to be servers rather than trying to
make a desktop computer function as a server is important, too.
- Fault tolerant. The amount of fault tolerance
is generally weighted against cost. Power supplies seldom fail, but some
people want redundant power supplies so that if one fails the other is
already there to take over. Similarly, RAID5 storage helps prevent the
computer systems from stopping if one hard drive crashes; that drive can
be replaced and the information should get restored.
- Cost effective. Let's face it, a small or
medium business can't afford the same very expensive servers that a
Fortune 500 company may buy. However, those same businesses want quality
and reliability for their investment.
