3Com® 11a/b/g Wireless PC Card with XJACK® Antenna
Wireless PC Card, 802.11a, b, g

Wireless networking is now a popular option for connecting computers together. Originally operating at 11 Mbps, which is a bit higher than the Ethernet 10 Mbps speed, new products support 54 Mbps bandwidth.

Key Benefits:

  •  Mobility: You can stay connected while you are on the move.
  •  Flexibility: You can "reorganize" employees without having to change infrastructure.
  •  Speed: A wireless network is generally faster to install and de-install.

Situations Where Wireless is a Good Fit:

  •  Organizations with mobile users such as sales or service employees with laptops.
  •  Temporary offices such as at construction sites, entertainment events, remote conferences and meetings.
  •  Branch offices in leased spaces where you do not want to incur expenses for new infrastructure wiring.
  •  Warehouses and factories where users may be on electric carts, forklifts, using bar code scanners, etc.

Wireless Concerns:

  •  Security: Wireless networks are often not as secure as they should be, leading to possible hacking and espionage.
  •  Non-optimum signal strength: The maximum bandwidth may be, say, 54 Mbps, but the bandwidth may throttle down to a much lower value if there are strictures that attenuate the signal strength or if you are farther away from the wireless access point (WAP).
  •  Interference: Wireless signals can sometimes be affected by other R.F. sources such as microwaves, electric motors, copiers, etc.. This can cause packet corruption and cause higher retransmission.
